In contemporary society, the cult of celebrity is inescapable. Anyone can be turned into a celebrity, and anything can be made into a celebrity event. Celebrity has become a part of everyday life, a common reference point. But how have people like Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Bill Clinton or Princess Diana impressed themselves so powerfully on the public mind? Do they have unique qualities, or have their images been constructed by the media? And what of the dark side of celebrity - why is the hunger to be in the public eye so great that people are prepared to go to any lengths to achieve it, as numerous mass murderers and serial killers have done. Chris Rojek brings together celebrated figures from the arts, sports, politics and other public spheres, from O.J. Simpson and Marilyn Monroe to Hitler and David Bowie, and touches on many movements and fads, including punk, rock-and-roll and fashion. Rojek analyzes the difference between ascribed celebrity, which derives from bloodline, and achieved celebrity, which follows on from personal achievement - the difference between Princess Margaret and, say, Woody Allen. He also shows how there is no parallel in history to today's ubiquitous living form of celebrity, powered by newspapers, PR departments, magazines and electronic mass media.

In this book we find Tom Cruise, Brigitte Bardot, Elton John, Mick Jagger, Joan Collins, Michael Caine, Paul Newman, Clint Eastwood, Sean Connery and others who have superseded the fads of reputation and proven their celebrity longevity. The range of Terry O'Neill's celebrity portraits reaches from Audrey Hepburn to Naomi Campbell, from Frank Sinatra to Kate Moss, in a celebration of true celebrity. A.A. Gill's witty and insightful introduction to the book analyzes what it is that allows these people to transcend their contemparies in the pantheon of the renowned; what makes some of them true celebrities, whilst others are merely and briefly famous.

Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - I was about to say that I had known the Celebrity from the time he wore kilts. But I see I shall have to amend that, because he was not a celebrity then, nor, indeed, did he achieve fame until some time after I had left New York for the West. In the old days, to my commonplace and unobserving mind, he gave no evidences of genius whatsoever. He never read me any of his manuscripts, which I can safely say he would have done had he written any at that time, and therefore my lack of detection of his promise may in some degree be pardoned. But he had then none of the oddities and mannerisms which I hold to be inseparable from genius, and which struck my attention in after days when I came in contact with the Celebrity. Hence I am constrained to the belief that his eccentricity must have arrived with his genius, and both after the age of twenty-five. Far be it from me to question the talents of one upon whose head has been set the laurel of fame! When I knew him he was a young man without frills or foibles, with an excellent head for business. He was starting in to practise law in a downtown office with the intention of becoming a great corporation lawyer. He used to drop into my chambers once in a while to smoke, and was first-rate company. When I gave a dinner there was generally a cover laid for him. I liked the man for his own sake, and even had he promised to turn out a celebrity it would have had no weight with me. I look upon notoriety with the same indifference as on the buttons on a man's shirt-front, or the crest on his note-paper.

Paparazzi: And Our Obsession with Celebrity Paparazzi: And Our Obsession with Celebrity
$1.52

Welcome to the world of the paparazzi, who will go to any length to get a photograph of celebrities and accused murderers, royals, and rock stars. More than 200 photos accompany interviews with the top practitioners of this dark trade, along with the magazine editors, photo agency owners, and the subjects themselves.Stealth, impersonation, bribery, lock picking, ducking the cops. Oh, yes, and the odd bit of photography, too.brNo, the paparazzi don't have it easy. They're reviled by their subjects, by their employers, by their voyeuristic audience--and by the fashion and news photographers who think of themselves as artists and the paparazzi as creeps with cameras. They're the bottom feeders who shoot celebrities in all their infamy: drunk, undressed, distressed, lip-locked wih folks who aren't their spouses. They're the hunters and chasers who've nabbed on film everyone from Pamela Anderson to Princess Diana.brAnd we all love it. We may not want to admit it, but we can't get enough of these photos, keeping the paparazzi in business by buying everything from People to the National Enquirer and all the fan magazines and tabloids in between.brPaparazzi turns the spotlight on these photographers and their highly paid profession; on the celebrities who are the object of their lenses; and on the society that begs them to capture these megastars in both ordinary and compromising positions. The top practitioners of this global pop art, along with the photo agency owners, magazine editors, and the stars themselves, give us stories of the famous and infamous we've never heard before. It's our golden opportunity to get behind the viewfinder and see the hunted from the hunter's point of view.To be a paparazzo, you have to be thick-skinned. You're despised by your subjects, your peers, and the public, the ultimate consumers of your work. You will run afoul of security guards and publicists, lawyers and the police. You will be punched, spat upon, and have any number of obje?øQë…¸Rÿ¾Úx

$6

Photos, narratives, and quotations on the nature of fame and celebrity.pIn this stunning book, photographer Brian Howell takes us into the world of celebrity impersonators--the faux famous people who make a living at pretending to be someone else. Taken at various impersonator conventions and stage shows throughout North America, the photographs are both startling and poignant--for all of the frivolity and double takes (Isn't that Paris Hilton?) there is also a sense of the real person beneath the makeup and the artifice. Accompanying the portraits are first-person narratives by many of the subjects, many of whom feel personally close to those they are impersonating, even if they have never met them. In addition, in two essays, cultural critic Norbert Ruebsaat looks at the history of celebrity culture, and Geist magazine editor Stephen Osborne delves into the nature of photographing impersonators. As such, the book investigates the nature of fame in this era of celebrity blogs, stalkerazzi, and reality television--and how our obsession with famous people says as much about us as it does about them.pSubjects include impersonators of: brBonobrMike Myers (as Austin Powers)brGeorge W. The blemishes of vinyl and celebrity cultures from a bygone era will make you laugh out loud.Celebrity Vinyl is a laugh-riot reminder of what happens when famous people decide to (unsuccessfully) give singing a try. The number of celebrities, and pseudo-celebrities, that have indulged in such hubris boggles the mind: Burt Reynolds, Shaquille O'Neal, John Travolta, Eddie Murphy, Leonard Nimoy, Alyssa Milano - the list goes on and on, as do the laughs. Over 100 photographs of the album art that houses these celebrity recordings are paired with gut-punch funny captions.brThe collection started when the advertising agency that author Tom Hamling worked in elected to transfer its audio library to CDs. Since then, he has spent close to a decade acquiring celebrity vinyl, rooting through record store bins and traveling to far-flung flea markets. Hamling says of his ongoing quest to collect these curiously compelling objects, Sometimes I feel like Dr. Richard Kimble in search of the one-armed man. Except my one-armed man is the inaudible shriek of Jennifer Love Hewitt.brCelebrity Vinyl is a pop-culture microscope that reveals the nuances and blemishes of vinyl and celebrity cultures from a bygone era. Every example is accompanied by riotously hilarious captions that dissect the album's artwork and graphic design, as well as the celebrity in question.brJoin Hamling on this personal tour of his peculiar passion. You are sure to laugh more now than you did back then!

Celebrity-in-Chief Celebrity-in-Chief
$3.48

U.S. presidents and Hollywood have had a mutual admiration society that extends far back into history. In Celebrity-in-Chief, journalist Alan Schroeder contends that each camp has influenced the other-particularly over the past century-creating a president who no longer stands apart upon a remote civic pedestal, isolated from Hollywood and pop culture. Instead, the powerful forces of the American celebrity circus drag him into the tent and ask him to put on a show. The job of president has always been politically demanding, but now there is another requirement: to exude star quality. In the parlance of Hollywood, he must "fill the frame." Drawing upon a wealth of fascinating anecdotes about some of the most celebrated individuals in American history, Schroeder shows how a succession of presidents since Woodrow Wilson has put on a show with mixed results. Whether it was Bill Clinton playing sax on TV talk shows or George W. Bush's Top Gun stunt aboard an aircraft carrier, Celebrity-in-Chief entertainingly and convincingly shows that the result is a wholesale demystification of the office-and that this marriage of pop culture and the presidency will continue to fascinate and endure.

Celebrity Crimes Celebrity Crimes

Victims, survivors, killers and suicides: all the people in this book are celebrities whose lives have gone awry. Celebrity has always come at a cost. If there were such a thing as a manual for how to survive celebrity, one of its key points would have to be: `Abandon all hope of a private life, ye who enter here.' Celebrities have, almost by definition, always had to make deals with the devil—fame and fortune and access to extraordinary experiences and really great bananas in exchange for being public property. From Wild Bill Hickock and Jesse James, and the Drugs and Deaths in the Silent Era to the mystery murder of Joy and George `Born Free' Adamson and the tragedies of celebrities like Versace, this book has all the killings, suicides, victims of crime and drug crimes that shocked the world. The tragedies of the deaths of the Beatles stars John Lennon and George Harrison are included, as are the `trials of the centuries', like OJ Simpson and Lana Turner and her daughter and then there are the misadventures—Brian Jones, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and the tragic lives of the former child stars—River Phoenix and Dano Plato.

A meditation on the condition of immigrants in the US and elsewhere, by a young Indian-born literary scholar, poet, and photographer. The book's chapters are the categories on a passport: name, date of birth, place of birth, sex, identifying marks, etc. Kumar shows how human complexities and histories resist placement on those dotted lines.Passport Photos is a radiant text. It connects its own ironic lyricism with an acute awareness of historical context, and is a moving document of the questions posed by symbolic migration.--Sara Suleri Goodyear, author of Meatless DayspAmitava Kumar brings his talents as a photographer, poet, scriptwriter, and journalist to the job of critical commentary, refusing to partition and delegate these skills to separate provinces of his intellectual life. The result is an ethical voice and a technical style that often defies our expectations of the critical commentator. I find that voice and style immensely appealing, no more so than in the multi-genre documentary work of Passport Photos. This is not a heavy-handed screed on the conditions of immigrants. It is a sensuous guide to the common contradictions and experiences faced by immigrants to the U.S., whether they are coming from the underside of the international division of labor or from well-heeled and credentialed birthrights. An undeniably original contribution to several academic and journalistic fields, Passport Photos will, I expect, be a widely-acclaimed publication and much cited as a fresh paradigm-shaker.--Andrew Ross, author of The Celebration ChroniclespAn important, timely, and unique book that seems to have multiple lines of descent--as if postcolonial theory were cross-pollinated with poetry, photojournalism, and memoir all at once.--Michael Berube, author of Life As We Know It: A Father, a Family, and an Exceptional ChildpAmitava Kumar is the most grounded of the postcolonial writers today. Huey Long: His Life in Photos, Drawings, and Cartoons Huey Long: His Life in Photos, Drawings, and Cartoons
$16.86

Few politicians, other than presidents, have enjoyed as much extensive public attention as did Huey Pierce Long. So great was his persona that even now, generations after his death, he is well remembered, not only for his work, but also for the personality that reshaped Louisianais political history. Images from Huey Longis early life show a serious, well-groomed young man setting off to earn a living from among the stateis poorer constituents. His political fortunes continued to grow, beginning with completing a three-year law-school program at Tulane in only two years, eventually culminating in his embrace of the entire state with his policies that gave him the public support to win a seat in the United States Senate. Long became a national celebrity before he was a national political figure. Images from the time of his rise to power show him engaged in all kinds of activities, including, of course, stump speeches, but also singing, demonstrating the best way to consume potlikker, and smiling in the company of politicians and constituents. Editorial cartoonists from the beginning of Longis career to the end, had a field day with Longis flamboyance and his

Literary Celebrity in Canada Literary Celebrity in Canada
$14.99

In recent years, Canadian authors have enjoyed tremendous international success, from writing novels that become Oscar-nominated films to achieving coveted success as selections for the Oprah Winfrey bookclub. Literary Celebrity in Canada is the first extended study of the dynamics of celebrity in the field of Canadian literature. Building on the argument that celebrity is a phenomenon firmly embraced by mainstream culture, Lorraine York examines celebrity in relation to various tensions and conflicts within the literary community and beyond.pUsing as examples three contemporary literary celebrities - Margaret Atwood, Michael Ondaatje, and Carol Shields - and four earlier popular writers - Pauline Johnson, Stephen Leacock, Mazo de la Roche and L. M. Montgomery - York demonstrates that fame is performed in different keys by particular star authors and those performances can be contradictory and complex. York casts doubt on the notion of a specifically Canadian response to fame. Depending on the public interpretation of a particular writer's life and work, different tensions arise in negotiating literary celebrity. Privacy versus publicity; swift success versus laborious apprenticeship; national versus international association, or ownership of the celebrity: no single version of celebrity applies to all.pCitizenship, however, is a remarkably consistent site of tension for stars, literary or otherwise. Like citizenship, celebrity marks an uneasy space wherein the single, special individual and the group demographic both meet and separate. Literary Celebrity in Canada explores that space, drawing on current theories of celebrity and questioning their tendency to view fame as anempty phenomenon. This study is an innovative attempt to understand the psychology of literary stardom and will influence future research on contemporary literature and popular culture.

In his new collection, Kinky's Celebrity Pet Files, the Kinkster writes about his famous friends and their pets you've never met, each with a story as delightful and offbeat as the author himself.pKinky has gathered together an eclectic and extraordinary group of talented celebrity pals to talk about the subject nearest and dearest to their hearts: their pets. With candid, personal photos of the stars and their beloved animals and insider stories to match, the book is like a party only Kinky could throw, and the results are both entertaining and endearing. It's not your average celebrity pet book, because Kinky's not your average celebrity. He's got musicians, like Johnny Cash and his pig, Brian Wilson with his dog, and Willie Nelson doing his best horse whisperer impersonation; actors and comedians ranging from Phyllis Diller with Miss Kitty to Richard Pryor on a pygmy pony; and a lineup of writers, politicians, and some heroes of the past -- Bill Clinton, Joseph Heller, and Mark Twain, to name a few.pHilarious, oddball, heartwarming, and edgy all at once, Kinky's Celebrity Pet Files is a book for animal lovers, celebrity junkies, and anyone who just likes a good story. It's a little weird, it's completely charming, and it's 100 percent Kinky.
