In contemporary society, the cult of celebrity is inescapable. Anyone can be turned into a celebrity, and anything can be made into a celebrity event. Celebrity has become a part of everyday life, a common reference point. But how have people like Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Bill Clinton or Princess Diana impressed themselves so powerfully on the public mind? Do they have unique qualities, or have their images been constructed by the media? And what of the dark side of celebrity - why is the hunger to be in the public eye so great that people are prepared to go to any lengths to achieve it, as numerous mass murderers and serial killers have done. Chris Rojek brings together celebrated figures from the arts, sports, politics and other public spheres, from O.J. Simpson and Marilyn Monroe to Hitler and David Bowie, and touches on many movements and fads, including punk, rock-and-roll and fashion. Rojek analyzes the difference between ascribed celebrity, which derives from bloodline, and achieved celebrity, which follows on from personal achievement - the difference between Princess Margaret and, say, Woody Allen. He also shows how there is no parallel in history to today's ubiquitous living form of celebrity, powered by newspapers, PR departments, magazines and electronic mass media.

In this book we find Tom Cruise, Brigitte Bardot, Elton John, Mick Jagger, Joan Collins, Michael Caine, Paul Newman, Clint Eastwood, Sean Connery and others who have superseded the fads of reputation and proven their celebrity longevity. The range of Terry O'Neill's celebrity portraits reaches from Audrey Hepburn to Naomi Campbell, from Frank Sinatra to Kate Moss, in a celebration of true celebrity. A.A. Gill's witty and insightful introduction to the book analyzes what it is that allows these people to transcend their contemparies in the pantheon of the renowned; what makes some of them true celebrities, whilst others are merely and briefly famous.

But I see I shall have to amend that, because he was not a celebrity then, nor, indeed, did he achieve fame until some time after I had left New York for the West. In the old days, to my commonplace and unobserving mind, he gave no evidences of genius whatsoever. He never read me any of his manuscripts, which I can safely say he would have done had he written any at that time, and therefore my lack of detection of his promise may in some degree be pardoned. But he had then none of the oddities and mannerisms which I hold to be inseparable from genius, and which struck my attention in after days when I came in contact with the Celebrity. Hence I am constrained to the belief that his eccentricity must have arrived with his genius, and both after the age of twenty-five. Far be it from me to question the talents of one upon whose head has been set the laurel of fame! When I knew him he was a young man without frills or foibles, with an excellent head for business. He was starting in to practise law in a downtown office with the intention of becoming a great corporation lawyer. He used to drop into my chambers once in a while to smoke, and was first-rate company. When I gave a dinner there was generally a cover laid for him. I liked the man for his own sake, and even had he promised to turn out a celebrity it would have had no weight with me. I look upon notoriety with the same indifference as on the buttons on a man's shirt-front, or the crest on his note-paper.

From the book:BRI was about to say that I had known the Celebrity from the time he wore kilts. When I knew him he...

Celebrity-in-Chief Celebrity-in-Chief

U.S. presidents and Hollywood have had a mutual admiration society that extends far back into history. In Celebrity-in-Chief, journalist Alan Schroeder contends that each camp has influenced the other-particularly over the past century-creating a president who no longer stands apart upon a remote civic pedestal, isolated from Hollywood and pop culture. Instead, the powerful forces of the American celebrity circus drag him into the tent and ask him to put on a show. The job of president has always been politically demanding, but now there is another requirement: to exude star quality. In the parlance of Hollywood, he must "fill the frame." Drawing upon a wealth of fascinating anecdotes about some of the most celebrated individuals in American history, Schroeder shows how a succession of presidents since Woodrow Wilson has put on a show with mixed results. Whether it was Bill Clinton playing sax on TV talk shows or George W. Bush's Top Gun stunt aboard an aircraft carrier, Celebrity-in-Chief entertainingly and convincingly shows that the result is a wholesale demystification of the office-and that this marriage of pop culture and the presidency will continue to fascinate and endure.
Celebrity Crimes Celebrity Crimes
$15.98

Victims, survivors, killers and suicides: all the people in this book are celebrities whose lives have gone awry. Celebrity has always come at a cost. If there were such a thing as a manual for how to survive celebrity, one of its key points would have to be: `Abandon all hope of a private life, ye who enter here.' Celebrities have, almost by definition, always had to make deals with the devil—fame and fortune and access to extraordinary experiences and really great bananas in exchange for being public property. From Wild Bill Hickock and Jesse James, and the Drugs and Deaths in the Silent Era to the mystery murder of Joy and George `Born Free' Adamson and the tragedies of celebrities like Versace, this book has all the killings, suicides, victims of crime and drug crimes that shocked the world. The tragedies of the deaths of the Beatles stars John Lennon and George Harrison are included, as are the `trials of the centuries', like OJ Simpson and Lana Turner and her daughter and then there are the misadventures—Brian Jones, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and the tragic lives of the former child stars—River Phoenix and Dano Plato.

Disaster and Memory counts among the most vigorous and inspiring studies of cinema that I have read over the last decade. I advise film students at large to read the book without delay.pUsing the media's coverage of the death of Princess Diana as a departing point, Wheeler Dixon presents a sharply critical assessment of the current state of movies--from the cult of celebrity, to the nature of public surveillance, to the role of print and television media in shaping our shared consciousness--unveiling our fascination with disaster.pUsing the media's coverage of the death of Princess Diana as a departing point, Wheeler Dixon presents a sharply critical assessment of the current state of movies--from the cult of celebrity, to the nature of public surveillance, to the role of print and television media in shaping our shared consciousness--unveiling our fascination with disaster. Dixon argues that movies such as James Cameron's Titanic replay the same Hollywood disaster plotlines with greater wizardry and less humanity than the films of fifty years ago. Contemporary cinema has become simply a memory of itself. Dixon draws on the effects of new technologies, the role of the star system, and the development of media conglomerates to explain why Hollywood has become so repetitive. Looking at a wide range of film genres, from obscure horror to blockbuster disaster movies, Dixon weaves together the elements that entice and manipulate audience expectations and emotions. Throughout the book, he examines the role of televisual media (cable, video, instant print magazines, digitally stored photos) in capturing the public's attention, and how these media could instead be used to open movie audiences to new stories and experiences. With its broad scope and frank tone, Disaster and Memory offers a refreshing and controversial perspective on the past, present, and future of Hollywood.

PThe 2000 election was a presidential election in which the leading candidates were two sons of former politicians (George W. Bush and A1 Gore), a former basketball player (Bill Bradley), and a former prisoner of war (John McCain). Hillary Rodham Clinton made history by becoming the only first lady to run for and win a U.S. Senate seat. Four Kennedys (Ted and Patrick Kennedy, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, and Mark Shriver) now serve in elective office, and a former professional wrestler, Jesse Ventura, is governor of Minnesota. Celebrityhood pervades the political process from campaigns and elections to governing, lobbying, and legislating./PPICelebrity Politics/Ilooks at the history and contemporary role of celebrities in American politics, and the long-term implications of this trend. It examines the intersection of prominent families such as the Kennedys, Bushes, and Clintons with entertainment figures like Charlton Heston (now head of the National Rifle Association), Warren Beatty, the Rock, and Barbra Streisand. In this book, we analyze the celebrities, from John Glenn and Jim Bunning to Jesse Jackson, Jr., and Steve Largent, who have served in Congress in recent years. Our discussion of governing looks at the Reagan, Bush (both father and son), and Clinton presidencies to see how politicians use celebrities to raise money and issue awareness on a wide variety of causes. We show how television and movies intersect with the political process, as demonstrated by the popularity of the NBC show, West Wing. Since this book examines celebrity-politics in historical context as well as in the contemporary situation, it can be used as a valuable supplementary reading in Introduction to American Politics courses as well as classes on mass media, campaigns and elections, Congress, the presidency, parties, interest groups, and popular culture./PPDespite the importance of the subject, few books address celebrity politics. A meditation on the condition of immigrants in the US and elsewhere, by a young Indian-born literary scholar, poet, and photographer. The book's chapters are the categories on a passport: name, date of birth, place of birth, sex, identifying marks, etc. Kumar shows how human complexities and histories resist placement on those dotted lines.Passport Photos is a radiant text. It connects its own ironic lyricism with an acute awareness of historical context, and is a moving document of the questions posed by symbolic migration.--Sara Suleri Goodyear, author of Meatless DayspAmitava Kumar brings his talents as a photographer, poet, scriptwriter, and journalist to the job of critical commentary, refusing to partition and delegate these skills to separate provinces of his intellectual life. The result is an ethical voice and a technical style that often defies our expectations of the critical commentator. I find that voice and style immensely appealing, no more so than in the multi-genre documentary work of Passport Photos. This is not a heavy-handed screed on the conditions of immigrants. It is a sensuous guide to the common contradictions and experiences faced by immigrants to the U.S., whether they are coming from the underside of the international division of labor or from well-heeled and credentialed birthrights. An undeniably original contribution to several academic and journalistic fields, Passport Photos will, I expect, be a widely-acclaimed publication and much cited as a fresh paradigm-shaker.--Andrew Ross, author of The Celebration ChroniclespAn important, timely, and unique book that seems to have multiple lines of descent--as if postcolonial theory were cross-pollinated with poetry, photojournalism, and memoir all at once.--Michael Berube, author of Life As We Know It: A Father, a Family, and an Exceptional ChildpAmitava Kumar is the most grounded of the postcolonial writers today. So great was his persona that even now, generations after his death, he is well remembered, not only for his work, but also for the personality that reshaped Louisianais political history. Images from Huey Longis early life show a serious, well-groomed young man setting off to earn a living from among the stateis poorer constituents. His political fortunes continued to grow, beginning with completing a three-year law-school program at Tulane in only two years, eventually culminating in his embrace of the entire state with his policies that gave him the public support to win a seat in the United States Senate. Long became a national celebrity before he was a national political figure. Literary Celebrity in Canada Literary Celebrity in Canada
$14.99

pIn recent years, Canadian authors have enjoyed tremendous international success, from writing novels that become Oscar-nominated films to achieving coveted success as selections for the Oprah Winfrey bookclub. Literary Celebrity in Canada is the first extended study of the dynamics of celebrity in the field of Canadian literature. Building on the argument that celebrity is a phenomenon firmly embraced by mainstream culture, Lorraine York examines celebrity in relation to various tensions and conflicts within the literary community and beyond.pUsing as examples three contemporary literary celebrities - Margaret Atwood, Michael Ondaatje, and Carol Shields - and four earlier popular writers - Pauline Johnson, Stephen Leacock, Mazo de la Roche and L. M. Montgomery - York demonstrates that fame is performed in different keys by particular star authors and those performances can be contradictory and complex. York casts doubt on the notion of a specifically Canadian response to fame. Depending on the public interpretation of a particular writer's life and work, different tensions arise in negotiating literary celebrity. Privacy versus publicity; swift success versus laborious apprenticeship; national versus international association, or ownership of the celebrity: no single version of celebrity applies to all.pCitizenship, however, is a remarkably consistent site of tension for stars, literary or otherwise. Like citizenship, celebrity marks an uneasy space wherein the single, special individual and the group demographic both meet and separate. Literary Celebrity in Canada explores that space, drawing on current theories of celebrity and questioning their tendency to view fame as an empty phenomenon. This study is an innovative attempt to understand the psychology of literary stardom and will influence future research on contemporary literature and popular culture.

It is a joy to my heart to celebrate with you the love that I have for the beautiful stars of Hollywood. In this context of unsure rhetoric, where very few verses are dedicated to the praise of the stars that we love. I wish the ink of my pen to flow for the benefice of all the stars of Hollywood and those in other parts of the world. With beautiful lyrics, and I say so with a fair judgment, I share with my audience the passion that rises from the promenade of my inspiration when, here and there the beautiful joviality of a smiling star dares me to express the spontaneity of my amazement with words of colorful enchantment. If stars are not to make us glad with the love of their marvelous glamour then what else can cause such enthusiasm So my wonderful reader, enjoy here the present of a lovely narration. It is my gift for you and the stars that enlighten the passion of your long quest for love.

Excerpt from book: CHAPTER III Events are consequential or inconsequential irrespective of their size. The wars of Troy were fought for a woman, and Charles VIII, of France, bumped his head against a stone doorway and died because he did not stoop low enough. And to descend from history down to my own poor chronicle, Mr. Cooke's railroad case, my first experience at the bar of any gravity or magnitude, had tied to it a string of consequences then far beyond my guessing. The suit was my stepping-stone not only to a larger and more remunerative practice, but also, I believe, to the position of district attorney, which I attained shortly afterwards. Mr. Cooke had laid out Mohair as ruthlessly as Napoleon planned the new Paris; though not, I regret to say, with a like genius. Fortunately Farrar interposed and saved the grounds, but there was no guardian angel to do a like turn for the house. Mr. Langdon Willis, of Philadelphia, was the architect who had nomi- nal charge of the building. He had regularly submitted some dozen plans for Mr. Cooke's approval, which were as regularly rejected. My client believed, in common with a great many other people, that architects should be driven and not followed, and was plainly resolved to make this house the logical development of many cherished ideas. It is not strange, therefore, that the edifice was completed by a Chi- cago contractor who had less self-respect than Mr. Willis, the latter having abruptly refused to have his name tacked on to the work. Mohair was finished and ready for occupation in July, two years after the suit. I drove out one day before Mr. Cooke's arrival to look it over. The grounds, where Farrar had had matters pretty much his own way, to my mind rivalled the best private parks in the East. The stables were filled with a score or s...
