As the way now seemed to lie plainly before me, preparations were made for my entering upon higher studies, the sacred ministry being kept steadily in view. I went to school, in Trinity School building, corner of Varick and Canal Streets. The Rev. Dr. Edmund Barry was at its head, a very able and successful teacher some fifty to sixty years ago in New York City. I began the study of Latin and Greek, and as I have, I believe, an aptitude for linguistics, I made both rapid and satisfactory progress. This was in 1833-34. In this latter year I was confirmed by Bishop Benjamin T. Onderdonk, then in his best days, and was admitted to the Lord's Table, with all its precious privileges. Columbia was the college for which I was preparing. At that date -- more than fifty years ago -- it was located in a charming spot of ground, fronting on what is now College Place, and between Murray and Barclay Streets. The original level was preserved, and noble trees stood on the lawn, shading the College buildings. These buildings were in a line, facing to the south, with houses atthe ends for the president and three professors, the recitation-rooms being in between.
